INTV, 4 May 2013 – 26 Iraqi Kurdish MPs and dignitaries from the Kurdistan region issued a statement emphasizing the urgent necessity to return Liberty residents to Ashraf.
The statement is as follows:
“It has been 15 months since Camp Ashraf residents have been housed in Camp Liberty on the pretext of their transfer to third countries. According to the pledges they were given by the United Nations and other relevant parties, Liberty was to be a temporary and protect site that meets international and humanitarian for these refugees. It was through the presentation of such obligations and guarantees that a mandatory relocation was enforced upon Ashraf residents and they were transferred from their 27-year-long home in Diyala Province to a prison dubbed Liberty.
“However, it has now become clear that these refugees were deceived and Liberty was not a temporary and protected site, and also does not meet international and humanitarian standards, and even the residents’ lawyers are deprived from meeting their clients.
“The 9 February 2013 attack against Camp Liberty, which left 8 refugees killed and around 100 injured, showed that Liberty has even been turned into a killing field for these refugees. Threats of Iran-linked terrorist groups to attack this camp again continue and these refugees are facing further massacres.
“Therefore:
“Considering the fact that the UNHCR has recognized residents of both camps Ashraf and Liberty as ‘protected persons’ under international laws, and expressed concern about their status and in its fifth statement dating 1 March 2013 considered the Iraqi government responsible for their safety and security, and considering the fact that Liberty’s main issue is the lack of security for the residents,
“We the signatories of this statement announce:
“Firstly: Liberty residents must immediately be returned to their home in Diyala Province (Camp Ashraf) where their security level is much higher than Liberty, and their resettlement to other countries should take place from Ashraf.
“Secondly: The subject of asylum seekers and refugees in Ashraf and Liberty is completely under the framework of the UNHCR’s duties and the High Commissioner must assume this responsibility far from Martin Kobler’s interventions.”
