Reporteurs Sans Frontieres has marked the World Day Against Cyber Censorship (March 12) by naming 31 institutions as 'Enemies of the Internet' for their role at the heart of governments’ surveillance or censorship.
The 2014 list of Enemies of the Internet includes “surveillance dealerships” forums that bring companies specializing in communications interception or online content blocking together with the officials from the regime's such as the clerical regime in Iran.
The three arms trade fairs known as ISS World, Technology Against Crime and Milipol are on the list .Companies on the list include Hacking Team (Italy) and Vupen (France).
Content filtering, control over Internet service providers, the interception of communications, cyber-attacks and the imprisonment of bloggers and netizens are common practice in Iran.
Three bodies are responsible for carrying out policy of cyber repression inside Iran: the Supreme Council for Cyberspace, the Organized Crime Surveillance Centre and the Revolutionary Guards.
The Supreme Council for Cyber-Space formed in March 2012 by the order of the regime's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The council includes senior military and political leaders including the speaker of Majlis (parliament), the head of the judiciary, the minister of Culture, the minister of Intelligence and Security, the commander of IRGC, and the attorney general.
The policies and decisions of the Supreme Council for Cyberspace are applied and carried out by the Working Group for Identifying Criminal Content. The group created in 2008 has 13 members. Since it was created, it has ordered the closure of hundreds of news sites.
The IRGC controls the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI) the main Internet service provider in Iran. The TCI is also responsible for ordering the blocking of websites.
