UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Twenty five years ago only ¼ of the UN Member States had banned executions, United Nations Secretary-General wrote on his website on Saturday, July 5th.
Today, over 80% of the countries, around 160 Member States, have revoked the death sentences or practically don’t carry out such measures.
The UN General Assembly will soon review a resolution on the legal deadline of using death sentences, which was first passed back in December 2007.
This resolution traditionally calls on all countries to gradually limit the use of death sentences, decrease the number crimes punishable by execution and impose a legal deadline with the vision of cancelling death sentences.
As the UN Secretary-General stated in his report on death sentences, he remains extremely concerned on lack of efforts and respect for human rights standards in countries that continue to carry out death sentences.
