NCRI - The former Foreign Minister of France Bernard Kouchner has condemned the Iraqi government’s “disgraceful” blockade since last Tuesday of food and fuel to Camp Liberty in Iraq which houses thousands of members of Iran’s main opposition group.
Camp Liberty, located near Baghdad International Airport, is home to members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, PMOI (or Mujahadeen-e-Khalq, MEK) who have been recognized by the United Nations as ‘asylum seekers’ and ‘people of concern.’
Despite the scorching 50 degree heat which has forced the Iraqi government to shut down all state institutions, Iraqi forces are preventing the entry of diesel fuel, petrol and septic tankers and food trucks into the camp. All the basic services in the camp such as drinking water purification services, refrigerators, cooling systems and food services run on electricity provided by fuel based power generators.
In an interview with the French channel iTELE TV on Thursday, Mr Kouchner said: “The day after the nuclear agreement [between Iran and P5+1 countries], under 50 °C temperature there [Baghdad], all food trucks, and water and septic tankers were not allowed to enter the camp. This a disgrace for a camp that is under the supervision of the United Nations which on the orders of the Iranian regime is being held hungry by Iraq. This is disgraceful.”
The blockade on PMOI (MEK) members in Camp Liberty that began on Tuesday has created a serious crisis in the camp and has brought tremendous pressure on the residents.
Iraqi forces stationed at Gate 4 of Baghdad Airport have told truck drivers that Faleh Fayyaz has issued special instructions barring vehicles from entering Camp Liberty.
Camp residents and their supporter in many European cities have held protest gatherings demanding that the United States government, the United Nations office in Iraq (UNAMI) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) intervene so as to end Iraq’s criminal siege.
