Iran: shocking news of a young woman for sale

Iranian women being trafficed

A teenaged girl who fled her home filed a complaint against her old father after learning that her old man had literally sold her to a street vendor for 160 million rials (around $4,500).
This 17-year-old girl who has been identified by the first name Ziba (meaning beautiful) identified herself as an Afghan national. She said, “My mother and father came to Iran from Afghanistan about 24 years ago. I was born in Iran and went to school when I was 7. After three years in school my father no longer allowed me to continue going to school and I was forced to stay home. I was 12-years-old when my father raised the issue of getting married to a young boy, which I opposed.
Two months ago my father said one of his friends in Mashhad, northeast Iran, has asked me to marry his son and my father has sold me for 160 million rials (around $4,500).
“My father said he has received 90 million rials (around $2,500) in advance, and they have arranged for him to receive the rest of the money after I moved into his house. He had already sold my three sisters by receiving money and some of them have not yet been married, becoming somewhat like a slave.
“I remember that 10 years ago they sold one of my sisters – at the age of 12 – to a 35-year-old man for 8 million rials (now around $230). A little while later my sister had fled that man’s house.
“… I was a prisoner for two days… I had no choice but to jump out of my room window on the first floor and run away from home at night. For eight days I would walk the streets during the day and sleep in the parks at night.”
