Iran coronavirus update: Over 264,000 deaths, Rouhani continues to blame the people

 Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, April 24, 2021—Over 264,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 541 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, April 24. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 69,120, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 60,401 in Tehran, 17,220 in Isfahan, 16,695 in Razavi Khorasan, 16,004 in Khuzestan, 11115 in Mazandaran, 11,078 in Lorestan, 10,838 in East Azerbaijan, 9908 in West Azerbaijan, 9231 in Gilan, 9110 in Qom, 7967 in Fars, 6768 in Alborz, 6705 in Golestan, 6001 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 5948 in Hamedan, 5934 in Kerman, 5508 in Markazi (Central), 5294 in Kermanshah, 4680 in Semnan, 3928 in North Khorasan, 3302 in Ardabil, 3045 in Hormozgan, 3039 in Qazvin, 2900 in Zanjan, and 2716 in Ilam. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Conditions are poor in 18 provinces, especially in seven provinces where the status quo is even worse…The circumstances overall are concerning,” said regime President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday at a meeting of the National Covid-19 Task Force. “Today there is the threat of a mutated Indian strain that is even worse than the UK version,” he added.

“The numbers show that people themselves are not being careful enough and less than 60 percent of the population are abiding by health protocols,” Rouhani said in his usual preposterous remarks of holding the Iranian population accountable. He event issued threats in this regard. “The judiciary can begin taking action in this regard,” the regime President said.

Concerned of growing public anger, Rouhani blamed the sanctions for the lack of vaccine. However, prior to this, Rouhani had said time and again that the regime had no issues in procuring the money needed for the vaccine. In December 2020, the World Health Organization had said the U.S. is placing no obstacles before Iran in purchasing the vaccine and for Iran to provide the necessary currency.

“Last week, in comparison to the week before, we witnessed a 17 percent increase in the number of coronavirus patients hospitalized and a 48 percent increase in Covid-19 deaths. The provinces of Markazi, Hamedan, Alborz, Qazvin and Lorestan have the highest death rate across the country,” said the Health Ministry spokesperson on Saturday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“25 provinces are in extremely poor conditions. The seven provinces that are facing the fastest rise in the number of new cases are Tehran, Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan, Golestan, Lorestan, and Hamedan,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The number of new cases is on the rise. Hospitals are packed and cannot accept new patients. The ICUs are packed with patients. The waves will continue as long as the majority of Iran’s population is not vaccinated,” said Massoud Mardani, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to the state-run Shafaghna news agency.

“During the past 24 hours we have lost 25 coronavirus patients. More than 300 coronavirus patients are in dire conditions and under ventilators. The daily death toll in [East Azerbaijan] province has increased from one or two to 20 to 25 in the past few days, which is very concerning,” said the deputy dean of Tabriz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“The number of deaths in [Razavi Khorasan] province continues to be increasing and has reached 24 per day. The number of coronavirus patients hospitalized has increased to 1499. We have enormously difficult weeks ahead of us because Razavi Khorasan province has yet to reach the top of its fourth peak,” said the deputy dean of Mashhad Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the state-run Shahr-e Ariya News outlet.

“The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients in [Fars] province has increased to 2605, of which 349 are in ICUs and 32 people lost their lives yesterday,” said the deputy dean of Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University said 2468 people are hospitalized for coronavirus, of which 383 are in ICUs, and 30 people lost their lives yesterday, according to an IRNA report wired on Saturday.

“With 28 deaths in the past 24 hours the number of coronavirus patients who have lost their lives in Alborz province stands at 3335,” said the dean of Alborz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

The daily death toll has tripled in the past few days and 17 lost their lives in the past 24 hours in Ardabil province of northwest Iran. “Various hospitals across Ardabil have allocated most of their capacity to coronavirus patients. We are forecasting that the number of coronavirus patients hospitalized will reach between 700 to 1000,” the dean of the local Medical Sciences University said on Saturday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“During the past 24 hours 734 new coronavirus cases have been identified in [Qazvin province], of which 135 were hospitalized. Twelve people with confirmed Covid-19 symptoms lost their lives in the past 24 hours,” according to a statement released by the Qazvin Medical Sciences University on Saturday.
