Iran: prisoner of conscious must be freed

Iranian cartoonist Atena Farghadani

An international campaign in defense of the rights activist and cartoonists Atena Farghadani has issued a letter seeking the release of this prisoner from prison in Iran.
The United Nations and other human rights organizations consider Mrs. Farghadani as a prisoner of conscience who is behind bars for peacefully practicing her right to freedom of expression.
This letter has been signed by more than 115 individuals and entities, including a large number of cartoonists, newspapers and universities across the globe, from Africa to Europe and Asia.
This international campaign network in defense of cartoonists’ rights issued a medal of bravery to Farghadani last August. Each year this group issues this honor to a cartoonist who has been placed in danger due to their cartoon or practicing freedom of expression.
Farghadani is a critical cartoonist who received her degree in art from the al-Zahra University. She was first banned from continuing her studies for her master’s degree, and thus sent to prison for drawing a cartoon protesting a bill proposed in Iran’s parliament restricting women’s rights to control their childbirth practices and undermining their rights in general.

Your death is my shame

Poverty in Iran under Rouhani

A fifty-year-old homeless man, one of those miserable so called Carton-sleepers, died in the street in Yaftabad, south of Tehran, A news agency affiliated to the terrorist Quds force wrote: this morning, one of the Carton-sleepers diminished.
An Iranian poet, named M. Shough sent us this poem. It says:
Oh! My dear compatriot carton-sleeper!
You have died, and have no tombstone
The mullahs have stolen your money
And all the expenses for your treatment have been sent to Syria
To kill innocent Syrians
That is why you died in the street,
Because you had no money for hospital treat
That is why you died on street pavement
For you had no one to care
And so, your death is my shame

“We have a village in Sistan and Baluchestan (province) where every single man has been executed,” Shahindokht Molaverdi, the vice president for women and family affairs told the Mehr news agency.
“Today their children are potential drug traffickers; either because they will seek revenge for the deaths of their fathers or because they will need to financially provide for their families, as a result of lack of support by the government.”

There are some 22,000 refugees in Greece, with many trying to reach other European nations

Many refugees fear they will not be able to continue journey as new border controls by Balkan states leave them trapped

The UN is warning of a growing humanitarian challenge along Macedonia’s border with Greece as up to 7,000 people fleeing war in the Middle East and beyond remain stuck there, demanding they be allowed to cross.
Tensions are high as temperatures dip and many fear they will not be able to continue their journey.
Four Balkans countries have announced a daily cap on how many people can pass through and Austria has restricted entry for hundreds of thousands.
Consequently, Greece, a primary gateway to Europe, has been inundated with refugees following the border shutdowns.
People are trying to make their way to western and northern Europe, but border controls are forcing many into already overcrowded camps. Only some Iraqis and Syrians have been allowed to cross.

Iran: Inmates are subjected to transgression, violence by officials

Violence by prison officials in Mahabad Prison

Inmates in Mahabad Prison, western Iran are subjected to transgression and violence by prison officials, according to human rights activists and sources from inside Iran. Continuous inspections, insulting, cursing and attacking the prisoners were amongst the scenes repeated time and again in the past month in this jail.
Mahabad prisoners have been repeating such measures for no specific reason, and in most cases such inspections and actions would lead to attacking and insulting the inmates.
“To this day they have transferred a number of inmates outside of the ward, tying them up, cursing, punishing and harassing them by splashing water on them,” an informed source said to Hrana.
A prisoner who has recently been released named a number of the individuals harassing the prisoners as Major Jam’i, representative of the special anti-riot unit; Safari, head of prison security; and guard officers Ghanipour and Jahedi.
Around 700 inmates are held in the Mahabad Prison while the capacity of this facility is at a maximum of 400 inmates. This has forced the prisoners to live in packed conditions and more inmates seen sleeping on the floors.
Around 40 political prisoners are held in Mahabad Prison and they are not separated from other inmates. Nearly 50 prisoners are on death row, most of whom are condemned on drug-related charges.

Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps, IRGC arrests book sellers

Crackdown in Iran

As part of the continuous crackdown on freedom of thought and speech, the head of the IRGC intelligence in Gilan Province, northern Iran, said members of a group have been arrested for what he called as 'distributing and publishing deviant books.”
Mehdi Roudbareki said in an interview with Tasnim news agency on Thursday, February 25th that these individuals “launched a front company and began making contacts and attracting customers”.
Over 3,000 such books, such as “Satanic Verses” and published material related to the Baha’i minorities, were confiscated from these individuals, according to this IRGC intelligence official.
Books related to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) and monarchists were other publications confiscated by the Gilan IRGC intelligence teams.
These individuals have been handed to the judiciary branch, the Gilan IRGC intel chief added.
It has been years that many books are banned inside Iran and they are provided to those interested through the Internet and underground markers.
The price for printed versions of these books is usually expensive. However, the market of banned books in Iran have their share of customers and in recent years street vendors have been seen entering this market.
Book censorship and increasing restrictions on publications is the most important element behind the growth of the underground book market in Iran. Back in December the Iran Writers Center issued a statement once again protesting the policies of the Iranian regime in the field of culture.

All men in a village in Sistan and Baluchistan have been executed
ٔNCRI - In an interview with Mehr state news agency on 25 February 2016, Shahindokht Molaverdi, Rouhani's Deputy in Women and Family Affairs, acknowledged a minute section of Iranian regime’s criminal record and the unparalleled dimension of the executions. “We have a village in Sistan and Baluchistan that all of the men in that village have been executed,” Molaverdi said. “If the man of a family commits a crime, his wife and children must be punished? We have many cases were the man of the family has been thrown in prison for drug-trafficking or any other crime and the law has confiscated his belongings while a small apartment had been the only shelter for his wife and children… They have confiscated the only apartment of a family paying no heed to what a woman and her three children are to do [without a place to live].”

Iran’s sham elections - Paria Kohandel

Illustration on the mullahs domination of the election process in Iran by Alexander Hunter/The Washington Times

On March 6, 2006, I was nine years old and I was looking forward to the Iranian New Year. That morning I heard the doorbell ring. It was longer than usual. I was alone at home and as I was wondering whether I should answer it, the main glass door of the apartment complex was smashed and several strangers stormed our little house. I saw my father with them. He was handcuffed. I started screaming as I began to grasp what was happening.
I knew that my father had been arrested twice before by the notorious Ministry of Intelligence. I grabbed my father to prevent him being taken away by them again and one of the agents pulled a gun and put it to my head. The message was clear. My dad was dragged away.

The charges raised against Karimi are propaganda against the state and insulting the sanctities. The latter charge is due to one of his films by the name of “Writing Across the City” that was never actually shown in cinemas.

Iran: Another political prisoner on hunger Strike

political prisoner Saeed Hosseinzadeh

In his letter from inside Ward 7 of the notorious Evin Prison after 3 days of hunger strike, Saeed Hosseinzadeh, political prisoner and civil activist wrote: “The court ruling issued for me added to my earlier sentence. A need for medical leave and the fact that I am not physically fit to serve time in jail has been confirmed. Despite all this, due to the fact that Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) intelligence elements oppose this ruling, they are preventing my release from prison.”
Saeed Hosseinzadeh suffered from numerous illnesses while in jail, including breathing disorders, rheumatism, heart illnesses and intestinal disorders. However, despite all the legal follow-ups regarding his judicial dossier, his lawyer has yet to be allowed to review his client’s case.
Hosseinzadeh was arrested at his home by IRGC agents back in September 2014 and immediately transferred to solitary confinement in the IRGC-controlled ward 2A of Evin Prison. In a preliminary court he was sentenced to 7 years behind bars for propaganda against the state and insulting the supreme leader.

Syrian opposition yet to agree to fighting halt

Russian air strikes in Syria

BEIRUT (Reuters) Feb. 24, 2016 - Syria’s main opposition group said it has yet to commit to a U.S.-Russian plan to stop fighting in Syria on Saturday, underlining rebel doubts over a deal they fear will not prevent Russian air strikes against them.
Combatants are required to say whether they will agree to the 'cessation of hostilities' by noon on Friday (0500 ET), and to halt fighting at midnight Saturday. The deal does not include Islamic State or the Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate which is widely deployed in opposition-held areas.
The United Nations hopes the planned cessation of hostilities will provide a breathing space for Syrian peace talks to resume.
The last round in Geneva broke up earlier this month without progress after the Syrian government launched a Russian-backed offensive on the city of Aleppo, where more fighting was reported on Wednesday.
The Saudi-backed HNC, which groups political and armed opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, said on Monday it had 'given its acceptance of international efforts for a cessation of hostilities'.

Iran: Baha’i citizens tried in absentia

Seven Baha’i citizens, including three women living in Isfahan, were tried in absentia, without prior information or the presence of their lawyers in the court.

Mmes. Matin Janemian, Yeganeh Agahi and Zarrin Agha-Babaee were among those tried in absentia.

Iran: Member of women's national volleyball team killed

Fa'ezeh Ghazipoor, a high school student and member of volleyball youth team, was killed in the northern city of Neka.
She went to an apartment to purchase energy pills but the seller had a different plan. When the young girl realized, she started crying out and making noise in an attempt to escape the scene.
People hearing the noise gathered around the building before witnessing the strange scene of the national team member throwing herself down. The young volleyball player lost her life in Sari’s hospital.
Under the mullahs’ rule, if the young girl had given up to rape, she would have been stoned to death on the charge of adultery and if she defended herself she would have been hanged just like Reyhaneh Jabbari.
The state media announced three unnamed individuals were arrested in connection with this incident without giving any details.

This Kurdish prisoner was sentenced to death for his membership in the PKK. However, Iran’s supreme court decreased his sentence to 10 years behind bars.
Amnesty International issued a statement on 26 January 2016 calling for “Urgent Action” on the conditions of this Kurdish political prisoner.
Prior to this Kamal had written a letter to Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, reporting how he had been beaten by prison guards in Gohardasht Prison.

“It has been a year since they raided our house and arrested him. However, he remains in temporary detention while not temporary detention takes 1 year!” said the mother of this prisoner in her protests.
“In court they raised the charges of ‘assembly and collusion’ against Ali, along with ‘propaganda against the state’, ‘insulting the leader’, ‘insulting the president’ and ‘having satellite TV equipment’,” she added.
“I also followed up on other matters. However, the judge has to deliver his ruling and the ministry has yet to report on this case,” Mrs. Shahidi continued.
“When I go to follow up on his case the office manager the ruling is being typed. Then when I call they say it is not being typed, but they are waiting for the judge to answer!” she added.

Russia guilty of egregious war crimes in Syria, human rights group says

A man carries a child that survived from under debris in a site hit by airstrikes carried out by the Russian air force in the town of Douma

Amnesty International has told Sky News that Russia is guilty of some the most 'egregious' war crimes it has seen in decades.
The human rights organization claims Moscow’s warplanes have been deliberately targeting civilians and rescue workers in Syria over the last week.
Tirana Hassan, director of Amnesty’s crisis response program, said the attacks are ongoing, with strikes documented on schools, hospitals and civilian homes.
She claimed the bombing of civilian targets by Russian and Syrian forces was in itself a war crime, but warned there have been consistent reports of additional bombardments which injure and kill humanitarian workers and civilians attempting to evacuate the wounded and the dead.
The Kremlin denies it has been hitting civilian areas and insists it is dropping bombs only on terrorist targets.
However, evidence obtained by Sky News suggests that this is not the case.
Footage filmed in Aleppo five days ago shows the graphic aftermath of what’s claimed to be a Russian airstrike.

Workers protesting in Iran

Some 150 workers of Parand Yarn Factory gathered outside the industry complex in the city of Kashan, central Iran, planning to hold a protest rally. However, the police – already on high alert due to the upcoming sham twin elections on February 26th – intervened and prevented the workers from holding their rally.

Salman Rushdie’s life is once again threatened by Iran Revolutionary Guards

Irans Revolutionary Guards (IRGC)

The Iranian regime’s state media have reported that 40 state-run media outlets have jointly offered a new $600,000 bounty for the head of British author Salman Rushdie. The announcement was made to coincide with the anniversary of the fatwa issued by Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Mansour Amini, the head of the Saraj Cyberspace Organization and the Secretary of the Third Exhibition of Islamic Revolution’s Digital Medias announced on February 17 the names of the outlets that contributed money to the fund. The state-run Fars News Agency, which is closely affiliated to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), was among the largest contributors. Amini said that Fars has devoted one billion Rials, or nearly $30,000.
Cyberban also allocated one billion Rials, while Tehran Press News allocated 300 million, or nearly $10,000 and Saraj Cyberspace Organization and the Headquarters for Advocating Virtue each allocated 500 million Rials for the potential assassination.
Shahin Gobadi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran ( NCRI ) said: “This once again clearly shows that terrorism is intertwined with the very existence of this regime as one of the pillars of its survival. The mere fact that even the so-called media in this regime allocate a budget for terror manifests that all of the regime’s institutions are geared toward its ominous objectives. It’s simply ludicrous to think that one can reach out to some parts of the ruling theocracy to bring about moderation.”
Khomeini issued the fatwa against Rushdie on charges of blasphemy on February 15, 1989 to cover up the defeat of his goals in the Iran-Iraq war and in order to create crisis to divert attention from the regime’s problems and people’s demands following the Iran-Iraq war.
The regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and other officials have reiterated this fatwa on a number of occasions over the past 27 years. Khamenei underscored its validity on October 20, 2015.

One of the mischievous and evil plots that the Iranian regime resorts to against political prisoners, is to mix them with common criminals in order to expose them to threats and dangers of possible encounter with them.
A recent example of this evil plot was a fight and scuffle at one of the Evin Prison Wards where prisoners accused of embezzlement and other social crimes engaged in a fight with political prisoners. The incident happened when a number of individuals held in Evin for financial crimes began beating political prisoners in this facility.
The clash inside this infamous prison took place shortly before February 11 marking the 1979 revolution in Iran. Reports indicate a political prisoner by the name of Saeed Razavi Faghih was injured and transferred to the prison clinic.
