Maryam Rajavi calls for international investigation into deadly prison blaze in Iran

NCRI - Mrs Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, has offered her condolences to the families of the victims of the heart-breaking incident in which at least 11 defenseless prisoners lost their lives in an extensive fire in Shahr-e Kord prison, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
This catastrophe, caused by the suppressive forces who obstructed attempts to put out the fire, is an inhumane crime by the religious dictatorship ruling Iran, and whose perpetrators should be brought to justice, Mrs Rajavi said.
Mrs Rajavi urged international organizations and human rights bodies to condemn the intentional burning of the prisoners and called for the dispatch of a fact-finding mission to investigate the catastrophic living condition of prisoners in Iran.
She said: "This unprecedented atrocity is just one example of the catastrophes that the murderers ruling Iran have imposed on prisoners for many years. The barbarians ruling Iran should be banished from the family of nations and their leaders should face justice for their record fraught with atrocities."

On the afternoon of Monday, August 4, following several days of strikes by a number of prisoners in Shahr-e Kord prison in protest at inhumane living conditions, the head of the prison resorted to punishing a number of prisoners in order to terrorize them.

The other prisoners, in solidarity with their cell mates who were on strike, set fire to several mattresses. However, instead of putting out the fire, the prison authorities ordered the prison doors to be locked and prevented help from reaching them.

The authorities even prevented the work of fire-fighters who wanted to knock down a wall to save the prisoners. The wardens then left and abandoned the prisoners to be engulfed by the flames.
That evening, the regime’s intelligence officials issued secret orders to the mayor and the General Director of the city's fire fighting organization to prevent any reports on this atrocity from getting out.
