Iran: Call To Save Life of Political Prisoner Mehran Gharabaghi

Intelligence Ministry pressures Mehran’s family to force him to collaborate

Acting on orders by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, the regime’s judiciary in Khuzestan filed new charges against the political prisoner Mehran Gharahbaghi, including “corruption on earth,” “propaganda against the state,” and “membership in the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK/PMOI).” The IRGC arrested Mr. Gharabaghi on December 19, 2019, and transferred him to Behbahan Prison after interrogating and torturing him for a month.

Gharabaghi was suddenly transferred from Behbahan Prison to the MOIS Detention Center in Ahvaz on July 12, and new charges were filed against him. On December 25, 2021, he was transferred to Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, prompting concerns about his fate.

The new charges were issued by Seyed-Nasser Taheri-Nasab, an investigator with Branch 3 of the Behbahan “Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office.” The MOIS has repeatedly asked Mr. Gharabaghi’s family to pressure their son to renounce his beliefs and collaborate with the MOIS against the MEK; otherwise, he would be executed. Mehran suffers from heart disease due to torture and very harsh living conditions in prison.

The Iranian Resistance once again urges the United Nations and all human rights organizations and the European Union and its member states to take urgent action to save the life of Mr. Gharabaghi and other political prisoners and to condemn the pressure on political prisoners.
