Rep. Ros-Lehtinen presses State Dept on Camp Liberty siege in Iraq

NCRI - US Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the chair of the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Middle East & North Africa, on Friday wrote to the State Department's point man on Camp Liberty in relation to the food, fuel and logistical blockade imposed on the camp residents since Tuesday by the government of Iraq.
The camp houses thousands of members of Iran's main opposition group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran, PMOI (or Mujahedin-e Khalq, MEK).
While fuel is needed to run the camp’s generators, the residents are suffering from the blockade in Iraq’s scorching 50°C temperatures.
In a letter to Jonathan Winer, the State Department’s Senior Advisor for Mujahedin-e Khalq Resettlement, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen wrote:
“According to information my office has received, I would like to seek information regarding reports that the Iraqi National Security Advisor, Faleh Fayyad, has prevented food, fuel and septic trucks from entering Camp Liberty for several consecutive days this summer. As you know, the fasting month of Ramadan has just ended and temperatures can reach in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Denying the residents of Camp Liberty food and fuel under such conditions — and in fact, under any conditions — is cruel and inhumane.”
“If these reports are true, in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations, I urge the Department of State to press the Iraqi authorities to end this blockade and get the needed supplies to the Camp Liberty residents immediately. In addition, I also continue to ask the administration help protect and care for the residents of Camp Liberty and to press the Iraqi government to live up to its obligations to these residents.”
“Thank you and I look forward to your prompt attention to this pressing matter.”
