Every 16 days an Iranian miner dies as a result of incidents such as the mine crumbling or falling into the depth of the earth. These statistics are announced while over 5,000 metal ore miners in Yazd Province are on their 39th day of strike protesting harsh working conditions.
Miners’ protests were also seen in the Chador Malou mine near the city of Ardaka, being one of the most widespread workers’ protest rallies in Iran last year. During these protests and strikes last October around 20 minters were arrested. The miners were demanding higher wages and the workers’ branch chief of this mine to be expelled. They were on strike for 3 days.
The Chah Morghi marble stone mine, considered the largest marble stone mine in Asia, was closed down last year due to shortages in raw material. 600 miners lost their jobs as a result.
