INTV, 6 May 2013 –‘EveryOne’, the Italian group for international cooperation on human rights culture, issued a letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry calling for the immediate return of Camp Liberty residents to Camp Ashraf.
Urgent appeal for Camp Liberty (Iraq)
Hon. John Kerry, Secretary of State Secretary of State, As you are well aware, Camp Liberty, the residence of 3100 Iranian dissidents in Iraq, was targeted by 40 rockets in February 9, resulted 8 death and more than 100 injured among the residents. In your recent hearing in US Congress and Senate, you expressed your concern about the safety and security of members of MEK in Camp Liberty and also emphasized that in your last visit to Iraq; you raised this issue with Iraqi Prime Minister and also asked the government of Iraq to guarantee protection of Camp Liberty residents.
While we welcome your humanitarian position that indicates your deep understanding about the gravity of issue of Camp Liberty residents’ security, since Iranian regime was behind the recent missile attack, it is necessary to stress that the threat of another attack, similar to the previous one or even worse, is still exist. Dear Secretary, Camp Liberty because of its small area and lack of minimum security standards remained a source of constant concern for us because in next attack more defenseless refugees would lost their lives, the attack that the terrorist groups affiliated to Iran announced that it is imminent. Since you emphasized that assurance of the security of these refugees is the US obligation and as the government of Iraq stressed that it cannot guarantee there would be no further attack, therefore for providing the minimum protection for these residents, there is no other way except their transferring the US- even temporary- or returning them to Camp Ashraf. If resettlement of these residents in the US is not possible, then the only way left is returning them to Ashraf, where they enjoy comparative security and protection. While we express our concern about the situation of these refugees, and in light of the role and responsibility of the US, we urge you to manage returning of these defenseless refugees back to Camp Ashraf. Sincerely yours,
