Eye surgery of 53 patients deferred for months with some on verge of going blind
Once again, on Thursday, 30 October 2014, the suppressive Iraqi agents prevented the transfer of two patients with acute eye diseases to the hospital on the pretext that each day patients can only go to one particular hospital. As a result, the medical appointments of these patients who had been waiting for their appointments for a long time were cancelled. Now they have to again wait for months for another medical appointment with the specialist.
The eye surgery of 53 residents of Camp Liberty is now delayed for months by the stonewalling of the Iraqi forces. In the past weeks and with much difficulty, ten of these patients had made appointments with ophthalmologists, but the Iraqi forces prevented their transfer to the hospital thereby cancelling their appointments. Some of these patients are on the verge of going blind.
On this same day, the Iraqi forces prevented two interpreters of cancer patients from going along and allowed the patients to leave only after a two hour delay. Therefore, the patients who were late and had no interpreter could not make some of their appointments or medical tests as the working hours ended and had to return to camp without receiving the prearranged and necessary medical services.
Just like previous days, residents informed UNAMI of this criminal act, but no serious measures were taken to resolve the matter.
The Iranian Resistance calls on all international bodies defending human rights and refugee rights, as well as the World Health Organization and other pertinent UN organs to stage an international campaign to revoke this anti-human siege. Moreover, given the commitments of the U.S. government and the United Nations regarding the security and well-being of Liberty residents, it calls for their immediate intervention to end the medical blockade and to secure the free access of residents to medical services.
