Seventeen members of the Iranian regime's border guards were killed in clashes with "armed bandits" on the country's southeastern boundary with Pakistan overnight, state-run news agency IRNA reported.
The reports gave no more detail on the identity of the armed group.
IRNA quoted an unnamed official saying the fighting took place in Saravan, located in the southeast Sistan-Baluchistan province and the exact number of dead had not been confirmed.
One unnamed source identified the gunmen as “bandits or rebels opposed to the Islamic republic”.
