UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran calls on the world leaders to address Iran’s human rights during the nuclear talks

Ahmed Shaheed U.N. special investigator on Iran
UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed posted a statement on his website insisting on the efforts needed to improve the human rights situation in Iran.
Mr. Shaheed wrote that just as the international community is working on a nulcear deal with Iran, it is equally important that the Human Rights situation in Iran would also be addressed. 'The message is clear: as we work toward peace and stability, we must also recall that human rights are an equally important requirement of international community membership' Mr. shaheed said.
'The recent negotiations had little to do with human rights; both Iran and its negotiating partners publicly admitted as much. This is not to diminish the importance of the issues they addressed, since we cannot have the full realization of human rights without peace and security. But now that the most intense stage of the negotiations has passed, it is time for the Islamic Republic of Iran and other global powers to recall that the opposite is also true: genuine, lasting peace can never be attained at the expense of human rights', the Sepcial Rapporteur added.
