The state-run Mehr news agency posted a report shedding light on just the tip of the iceberg of the unemployment crisis in Iran.
“The number of current unemployed workers in the country is over 2.5 million. Of this number 1.2 million are new graduates that are in complete unemployment and with more and more students entering colleges in recent years, it is expected that in the next two or three years the number of university graduates looking for work will reach over 5.5 million .
Statistics standards show unemployment amongst people under the age of 30 in Iran is in a serious crisis and this situation will continue for the next 7 years. Deputy Minister of Labor said new estimates show that 5 million more job seekers will be entering job market in the next 7 years and if the current conditions continue the number of those in complete unemployment will increase to 5.7 million people.
The state-run Mehr news agency continued in its report, “According to job market experts, due to the delays caused in the job market and those born in the 1980s entering the job market it is expected that this demand for work will continue for the next 2 or 3 years. Currently, there are hundreds and even thousands of volunteers for some job opportunities in the country.”
