This strike followed the May 7 uprising of the people of Mahabad in protest to the death of Farinaz Khosravani who plunged from the fourth floor of a hotel to escape aggression against her by an intelligence agent. In this uprising that continued in the pursuing days in Mahabad and other cities, hundreds of Kurdish youth were arrested and a number of them were injured.
On Thursday, strikers demanded punishment of mullahs’ intelligence officers plus those responsible for the death of Farinaz and called for the release of the arrestees of last week’s uprising.
This strike took shape while the clerical regime has imposed an undeclared martial law in Mahabad, Sanandaj and many other Kurdish cities and has brought in suppressive forces to these cities from areas such as Orumiyeh.
On Wednesday, the state media wrote in fear of the persistence of the popular protests: “Enemies’ media are magnifying the incident in Mahabad to foment a crisis and place the people against the system, but the vigilance on part of the people defeated their blind attempts.” (IRNA state-run news agency – May 13)
