EXCLUSIVE REPORT: Iran’s notorious Evin Prison, Women’s ward

The situation of women and girls in the Iranian prisons
A grim report has surfaced recently from inside Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison describing the degrading and awful situation in the women’s ward.
According to this report, political prisoners have no access to telephone to contact their family members. The ward lacks basic medial and first aid materials and has been described as ‘deplorable’. In some cases, wrong medicines have been provided to prisoners causing one prisoner to go on severe convulsion and at other times, no medicines were provided to them. One woman lost consciousness after taking an almost fatally wrong medicine.

Shackles and handcuffs are used during transferring women from prison to courts or other places and offensive words are used when they are encountered the guards. They are usually insulted, abused and humiliated by the wardens or guards.
Medical clinic referrals are quite scarce or in rare cases the prisoners who are referred to doctors are threatened to have their physical problems released to the media. Women prisoners are harassed and often molested during body searches. And if they object to this degrading and humiliating treatment or object to not having access to telephone, they would be threatened to be transferred to a horrible Donjon called ‘Qarechak’ located outside Tehran. This inhumane response are often used to quiet and silence any descent.
It should be noted that Qarchak prison is famous for being a frightening place where many prisoners who were incarcerated there after the 2009 Iranian nationwide uprisings, were killed or mutilated or disappeared. The cells lack the least minimum accommodations.
