MEP refutes Iran regime's denial of human rights abuses

Gérard Deprez, chair of Friends of a Free Iran in the European Parliament, has been attacked by the Iranian regime's of Foreign Affairs over the harsh criticism of the regime, which included calling for an end to executions and the repression of women.
He said: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Iranian Islamic Republic issued a statement attacking me and refuting that such a statement on the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran and support of MEPs exists.
"Contrary to those insinuations, spread by IRNA, the Iranian Official News Agency, I confirm in the most formal way that the joint statement is authentic and was signed by more than 200 MEPs from all the political groups and representing all EU member countries.
"I would like to insist on the following fact: this statement is not intended to criticize the Iranian people but the regime because it does not respect fundamentals human rights.
"We are elected politicians and we care for our democratic values in Europe. What is important for us is that the people of Iran have the same freedoms and liberties we have here.
"We are therefore insisting to support the democratic plan by Madam Maryam Rajavi, which calls for a democratic pluralistic republic based on universal suffrage, freedom of expression, abolition of torture and death penalty, separation of church and state, a non-nuclear Iran, an independent judicial system, rights for minorities, peaceful coexistence in the region, gender equality and commitment to Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"Far from discrediting our initiative, it is the Iranian Official News Agency that discredits itself by confusing information and propaganda."
