Iran news in brief, April 8, 2020 Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll Surges to 20,400 in 245 Cities
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran announced on Tuesday that the Coronavirus death toll in 245 cities in Iran is at least 20,400. Meanwhile, Akbar Torkan, former Minister of Defense and Transportation said: “In addition to Coronavirus, we have to watch out for the Tirana virus. We are now facing two viruses, one is Coronavirus, and the other is the Tirana virus, which is the capital of Albania. Some 1,500 members of the MEK are based in camps there, where they sit behind computers in the state-of-the-art halls wage psychological and internet warfare against the Islamic Republic every day." Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the NCRI, said the official’s desperation and hysteria vis-à-vis the MEK and the Iranian Resistance, as they near the end of their regime, is quite evident and understandable. Iran: Elderly Political Prisoner Remains Incarcerated Amid Coronavirus Threat Elderly political prisoner Mohammad Amirkhizi remains incarcerated in the Prison of Karaj despite Judiciary’s New Year directive to free all prisoners over 70. Doctors at Madani Hospital of Karaj say Mr. Amirkkhizi is suspected of having cancer of prostate and must undergo special diagnostic tests and biopsy of the prostates. Despite his old age and his need to rest after the biopsy, his request for medical leave to be examined in a civilian hospital has been turned down by the prosecutor. Covid-19 Infection Rate Is Rising Among Iranian Medical Staff The number of Iranian medical staff who lost their lives to the coronavirus in under equipped hospitals across the country is on the rise. Health workers, including doctors and nurses at the front lines of the fight against the deadly virus, lack basic protective equipment. According to citizen reports from Saqqez, 40 of the nurses and staff of the Khomeini hospital have contracted coronavirus. Iranian authorities have sent quarantined all of them in their homes without considering their critical conditions.
