Iran coronavirus update: Over 246,400 deaths, official discusses possible fifth & sixth peaks

Iran, April 8, 2021—Over 246,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 535 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Thursday afternoon local time, April 8. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 63,884 around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 56,561 in Tehran, 16,085 in Isfahan, 15,885 in Razavi Khorasan, 14,704 in Khuzestan, 10,510 in Mazandaran, 10,388 in Lorestan, 9923 in East Azerbaijan, 9253 in West Azerbaijan, 8780 in Qom, 8616 in Gilan, 7247 in Fars, 6345 in Golestan, 6133 in Alborz, 5613 in Hamedan, 5449 in Kerman, 4914 in Kermanshah, 4427 in Yazd, 4350 in Semnan, 2799 in Qazvin, and 2775 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry spokesperson announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Thursday as 22,586 new cases, registering a new record, and 4221 patients are in ICUs, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency. The latter figure is the highest in the past 78 days.

“Considering the current circumstances, we will inevitably reach a fifth and sixth peak, and maybe even more. The virus is loose across the country and spreading at its will. No effective measure is being taken to prevent this trend… this peak should not be blamed on the people going on vacation,” said the deputy chair of Epidemiologist Scientific Association on Thursday.

Head of the regime’s Medical Apparatus General Assembly refused to accept remarks made by a Deputy Health Minister claiming 80 percent of the country’s medical staff have been vaccinated. “Not even in state hospitals do we have 80 percent of our colleagues vaccinated. Not even 80 percent of the nurses hired by state hospitals have received the vaccine yet,” this official said on Thursday, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.

“Tehran province reported a 48 percent coronavirus death rate in the past 24 hours. We have presented a specific proposition to lockdown the city. There is no other path to control this dilemma,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force, on Thursday. “In parallel we need to quickly have the society’s high-risk group and medical professionals vaccinated immediately. Accelerating the vaccination is a definite priority. Next week will be even more severe and dangerous than this week… The total number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized in Tehran province has surpassed the 5000 mark and we have 1172 in ICUs. Half the people are having positive PCR tests, indicating the virus is extremely active and spreading fast. Nearly all of Tehran’s 22 areas are contaminated and this is gravely concerning,” he added, according to state TV and according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“We now have 5400 coronavirus patients hospitalized across Tehran province. Our hospitals may become packed in the next few days,” said the deputy chair of Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Thursday.

“1200 hospital beds have been allocated to coronavirus patients and right now 927 are filled with patients, of which 200 are in ICUs and 65 patients are under ventilators,” said the deputy dean of Tabriz Medical Sciences University on Thursday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“Twelve coronavirus patients lost their lives in the past 24 hours and 132 were hospitalized. There are 749 coronavirus patients hospitalized as we speak,” said the dean of Alborz Medical Sciences University on Thursday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“The coronavirus situation in Razavi Khorasan province is horrendous. From April 4 it has become so severe that the graphs are not rising in stairway fashion, but more like elevators. On Tuesday we had 268 people hospitalized. The total number of people hospitalized stands at 864 and more than 200 are in ICUs,” said the deputy dean of Mashhad Medical Sciences University on Thursday.

“The number of patients hospitalized in Vasei Hospital has increased by four-fold. More than 65 percent of the hospital beds are filled with patients and we will reach full capacity in the next three or four days,” said the chair of Kermanshah Medical Sciences University’s Covid-19 Task Force on Thursday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Currently in Ardabil we are experiencing deadly Covid-19 days. 61 of our locals are in ICUs and in dire conditions,” said the dean of Ardabil Medical Sciences University on Thursday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“All six cities of [Qazvin] province are registered as red zones. The provincial field hospital will be launched today in the army hospital,” said the deputy chair of Qazvin Province Covid-19 Task Force on Thursday, according to the Mehr news agency.
