Iran: Inmates are subjected to transgression, violence by officials

Violence by prison officials in Mahabad Prison

Inmates in Mahabad Prison, western Iran are subjected to transgression and violence by prison officials, according to human rights activists and sources from inside Iran. Continuous inspections, insulting, cursing and attacking the prisoners were amongst the scenes repeated time and again in the past month in this jail.
Mahabad prisoners have been repeating such measures for no specific reason, and in most cases such inspections and actions would lead to attacking and insulting the inmates.
“To this day they have transferred a number of inmates outside of the ward, tying them up, cursing, punishing and harassing them by splashing water on them,” an informed source said to Hrana.
A prisoner who has recently been released named a number of the individuals harassing the prisoners as Major Jam’i, representative of the special anti-riot unit; Safari, head of prison security; and guard officers Ghanipour and Jahedi.
Around 700 inmates are held in the Mahabad Prison while the capacity of this facility is at a maximum of 400 inmates. This has forced the prisoners to live in packed conditions and more inmates seen sleeping on the floors.
Around 40 political prisoners are held in Mahabad Prison and they are not separated from other inmates. Nearly 50 prisoners are on death row, most of whom are condemned on drug-related charges.
