Iran: prisoner of conscious must be freed

Iranian cartoonist Atena Farghadani

An international campaign in defense of the rights activist and cartoonists Atena Farghadani has issued a letter seeking the release of this prisoner from prison in Iran.
The United Nations and other human rights organizations consider Mrs. Farghadani as a prisoner of conscience who is behind bars for peacefully practicing her right to freedom of expression.
This letter has been signed by more than 115 individuals and entities, including a large number of cartoonists, newspapers and universities across the globe, from Africa to Europe and Asia.
This international campaign network in defense of cartoonists’ rights issued a medal of bravery to Farghadani last August. Each year this group issues this honor to a cartoonist who has been placed in danger due to their cartoon or practicing freedom of expression.
Farghadani is a critical cartoonist who received her degree in art from the al-Zahra University. She was first banned from continuing her studies for her master’s degree, and thus sent to prison for drawing a cartoon protesting a bill proposed in Iran’s parliament restricting women’s rights to control their childbirth practices and undermining their rights in general.
