Afghan families living in Iran gathered in front of the UNHCR office in Tehran to protest the plundering by the Iranian regime Ministry of Education. The protesting families said close to 3 months since the schools have started, yet the school superintendents have sent to parents bills for tuition payments 3 times more than last years’ tuition. The amount that schools have required parents to pay is; 300,000 tomans ($135 Official Exchange Rate,OER) for elementary, 330,000 tomans ($150 OER) for pre-high schools and 360,000 tomans ($165 OER) for high schools.
More than 200 women attended this gathering to demand lower tuitions for their children.
Afghan refugees residing in Iran are mostly construction workers which work on a daily basis and don’t have a steady job. The high cost of living, staggering inflation and economic downturn which has been the result of the mullahs’ rule has affected the lives of low income people drastically.
