UN rapporteur calls for an end to executions in Iran

Ahmad Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran
Ahmad Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran on Friday, August 14th called on Iran to immediately call-off the execution of political prisoner Mohammad Ali Taheri.
Taheri is serving his sentence of five years after he was condemned on August 1st on charges described by the Iranian regime as “corruption on Earth”. He was arrested back in May 2011 on charges of “insulting the sanctities” and condemned to five years in prison.
Imprisoning and issuing death sentences for an individual for practicing his rights under the framework of freedom of religion and expression is unacceptable and a flagrant violation of international laws, Shaheed said, adding Taheri has been sentenced to death for believing and practicing his theosophical beliefs.
Shaheed went on to stipulate that the UN is against execution under any and all circumstances. He once again called on the Iranian regime to stop all executions.
